dockweiller beach
Seasons of Abercrombie & Fitch Quarterlies carved out a corner of my room next to the foosball table. Bruce Weber's signature black and white photographs dog-eared, marked up, and thumbed through. I grew up on his depictions of young, beautiful, carefree adolescents running off lake docks half naked, lounging around a beach bonfire and every so oft, radiating an innocent sexiness through a hard look. There were no responsibilities in that world. No car payment, no homework, no after school job. Their world transcended mine. I became one of them.
I still want to live in that world today. As a photographer, these are the images I love to create. They remind me of vigor, hope and the pursuit of happiness. My youth is preserved in their creation.
"It takes a long time to grow young." -Pablo Picasso

Oh! So amazing and beachy. Happy to look at when outside my window right now is 14 inches of snow.

paul costello would be proud... dear mark... better to be catalog fodder than a fodder catalog
(06.11.09 01:33 AM)
Janine:
Fred I love love love these! The only problem is that they remind me that I live in dull rainy Northern Ireland...if we tried running off lake docks half naked we would be hospitalized with hypothermia. No beach spirit here. Bah!
(06.10.09 02:25 PM)
Ava Martinez:
Your photos are always so much fun, these belong in a magazine :)

OOOOO... I love this shoot. I would LOVE to have pictures of me and my friends like this... just care free and loving life... and I'm 24. well, almost... next week :) But I think they're great! And I've never understood people's need to leave negative comments... if you don't like it, then go away.
(06.09.09 03:32 PM)
stephanie McBride:

These are fantastic pictures Fred! Your on your way man. Your writing really reminds me of the writing style of Anthony Bourdain from "No Reservations". I really like it!
(06.09.09 02:56 PM)
FRED EGAN:
Nathan <<< You have my back and I like your style. What Mark fails to realize is that this is MY blog, not a public wall in which to graffiti with his demeaning words. Anonymity is a cowardly stance to take on the Internet...it displays no backbone. I leave all comments up here most of the time (it helps build a tough skin if nothing else) but at least have the decency to leave an email address/website.
(06.09.09 02:44 PM)
Christine (Artemis Clover Photo):
love it!!
(06.09.09 02:33 PM)
Nathan Michael :
Love these images, Fred! And Mark, can you share with us a link to your site...I'd like to see your work since you apparently have impeccable taste. Quite frankly, I feel like it was a shallow & jealous gesture.
(06.09.09 02:31 PM)
Lisa:
Beautifully stated - youth is all about longing, and the desire for a "magical" future (one that we are so sure we can achieve when we are this age) Just because we tend to put our "youthful fantasies" aside as we get older, doesn't mean we still can't revel in them every once in a while and re-inspire ourselves...
(06.09.09 02:29 PM)
cat from nextexit:
Inspiring and delightful. xoxo
(06.09.09 02:17 PM)

I get it - we have stacks off these from our teenage years. I liked this post :)
(06.09.09 02:13 PM)
heather:
I meant AF (gotta love typos).
(06.09.09 01:10 PM)
heather:
I always itched for that AE beach spirit, but I grew up far from the beach, closer to the mountains. We embraced ours with hand knit beanies and hot cocoa. Nevertheless, I am loving this creamy beachy goodness, (love the Picasso quote!).
(06.09.09 01:09 PM)
Briony:
i never really looked at the catalogs as a kid so i guess i missed out on this escape but your images are beautful and do portray the ideals of youth, fun and of course summer.
(06.09.09 12:47 PM)
FRED EGAN:
Mark <<< Yes, I am serious with this crap. It's called writing. And yes, it's a bit pretentious BECAUSE I was 15 years old. Try to view it in context.
(06.09.09 12:42 PM)
Mark:
"Their world transcended mine. I became one of them."
Are you serious with this crap?
A bit pretentious for these boring, catalog-fodder images, but I'm sure you mean it.
(06.09.09 12:32 PM)
Dennis Bullock:
I always think these shoots of yours are so cool. Cut another watermelon last night!

ivie and osa

She grew up knowing it was a conventional part of life-not necessarily a medical condition. Ivie's grandmother would birth Nigerian babies on her living room floor. No residency, no diplomas, no letter's behind her name. Just the weathered hands of experience. So it comes as no surprise Osa holds the hand of a skilled midwife as they stroll through Central Park this warm Monday afternoon. The city is a buzz-a sporadic chatter of yellow cab horns, cell phone conversations and catholic school children. Yet, it's orbit around the green sanctuary of earth between 59th and 110th is true. It's gravity great. It's a reflection of Ivie and Osa's growing relationship. Her extroverted orbit around his strong, quiet core is one of destiny...as if God himself set them in motion. This is quite evident as she dances around him, propelled by his gravitational pull.
mike Larson:
I love the taxi shot and the juxtaposed shot to the left! AND I love the words you write as well, thats rare in the photoblogging world. How was the 3eb concert?! hope to see you soon bro...

kelley gin
Kelley Gin is terrified. Her nervous smile is ratting her out. We need a couple warm-up frames. I press the camera against my face but just as I do, a bright idea strikes me. We blast The Killers' Spaceman. Kelley loves The Killers but hasn't seen them live yet. I testify that they indeed put on a good show. In fact, I like The Killers too. So much so that I start fist-pumping to Brandon Flowers' arena rock-filling chorus in the middle of an empty Zuma Beach parking lot.
Maybe this catches her off guard. She's definitely laughing. She's also definitively gorgeous. Her gold heels testify to the fact that shoes alone can carry an entire look...maybe even carry her entire being.

Kelley Gin is the event coordinator and owner of Picture Perfect Events in Southern California. With a penchant for good design, she persuasively ushers her clientele away from the tired hotel wedding in exchange for the endearing...the organically romantic...the whimsical.
Helen:
I like those portraits, but i prefer the way you talked about her, how lovely!
(05.13.09 02:42 PM)
Shaunna :
yes, you are spot on about the shoes! I equally love the down-to-earth, barefoot shot though. xo

This is my first time to your blog and with these 3 images I am hooked. You captured her beautifully!

Hi Fred, Thank you SO much for the taking time out to shoot me. I had a wonderful time getting to know you and your passion for being behind a camera. klg
(05.05.09 09:21 AM)
frombrandon:
Wow, I love these. Very clean, very crisp. My favorite is the one with her holding her toes. It's different, and the dirty bottoms of her feet make a "clean and crisp" shot a bit more real. Very cool.

Briony:
these are wonderful! i love the plaid! such a beautiful use of natural light :)

Sam's planning her high school prom right now. That's what student body presidents do. Although nostalgic of her senior year, she's hopeful...optimistic about her move to Austin, Texas this Fall to study architecture. She'll be a Longhorn. And that's just the beginning for Sam.
Julie Brown:
Sam is such a beautiful girl! what an awesome picture!!
(04.16.09 12:50 AM)

Gorgeous, that sun flare is beautiful. It adds to her expression instead of taking away from it.

megan and nate
I enjoyed a brilliant weekend in Atlanta recently to photograph Megan and Nate in their hometown. They're marrying in August and I'm really looking forward to going back. Although I don't shoot indoors often with natural light, I'm always seeking out opportunities to do so. We tucked into a diner near Little Five Points for a burger and then headed to Piedmont Park with Hadleigh, their lovable English Bulldog.
Steven Chellappa:
Hi Fred! Just wanted to say saw your ad on the back of Pacific Weddings Magazine, and went to your site.... Really surprised when I heard the music, Lauryn Hill, exact same song I had when I started my website :) Irony! Anyways, really love your work! Great stuff man!

Awesome shots, Fred!! I've been following your blog via RSS feeds for the longest time, and when I found out my dear friends Nate and Megan here in Atlanta were doing shots with you, I knew they were in for something extraordinary. Once again, you never cease to amaze. I chatted with Megan via chat earlier today and we got agree on one thing: We LOOOOOVE the shots.
