dockweiller beach
Seasons of Abercrombie & Fitch Quarterlies carved out a corner of my room next to the foosball table. Bruce Weber's signature black and white photographs dog-eared, marked up, and thumbed through. I grew up on his depictions of young, beautiful, carefree adolescents running off lake docks half naked, lounging around a beach bonfire and every so oft, radiating an innocent sexiness through a hard look. There were no responsibilities in that world. No car payment, no homework, no after school job. Their world transcended mine. I became one of them.
I still want to live in that world today. As a photographer, these are the images I love to create. They remind me of vigor, hope and the pursuit of happiness. My youth is preserved in their creation.
"It takes a long time to grow young." -Pablo Picasso
Kodi Schroeder:
Oh! So amazing and beachy. Happy to look at when outside my window right now is 14 inches of snow.
(12.11.09 12:37 PM)
Steven Chellappa:
Wow! These are amazing! I've always wanted to do a fun beach shoot like this! It's very J.Crew/ Ralph Lauren! I LOVE IT!!!
(08.10.09 10:39 AM)
marco:
paul costello would be proud... dear mark... better to be catalog fodder than a fodder catalog
(06.11.09 01:33 AM)
Janine:
Fred I love love love these! The only problem is that they remind me that I live in dull rainy Northern Ireland...if we tried running off lake docks half naked we would be hospitalized with hypothermia. No beach spirit here. Bah!
(06.10.09 02:25 PM)
Amanda:
I don't get HOW you do this!! These pictures are just awesome. Every single one looks like something pulled from a multi-million ad campaign. Incredible work.
(06.09.09 11:55 PM)
Ronnie:
Love m and like the words accompanying them, there's a reason I come here,,,,inspiration.
(06.09.09 11:15 PM)
Kayleen T.:
Looks like I could rip these straight from a magazine! And beautiful writing to go along with such beautiful images!
(06.09.09 04:46 PM)
Diandra:
OOOOO... I love this shoot. I would LOVE to have pictures of me and my friends like this... just care free and loving life... and I'm 24. well, almost... next week :) But I think they're great! And I've never understood people's need to leave negative comments... if you don't like it, then go away.
(06.09.09 03:32 PM)
stephanie McBride:
hey, can i have my ball back? haha. fun, lively, well written and well shot. they were worth the wait.
(06.09.09 03:15 PM)
Hansel Dobbs:
These are fantastic pictures Fred! Your on your way man. Your writing really reminds me of the writing style of Anthony Bourdain from "No Reservations". I really like it!
(06.09.09 02:56 PM)
FRED EGAN:
Nathan <<< You have my back and I like your style. What Mark fails to realize is that this is MY blog, not a public wall in which to graffiti with his demeaning words. Anonymity is a cowardly stance to take on the Internet...it displays no backbone. I leave all comments up here most of the time (it helps build a tough skin if nothing else) but at least have the decency to leave an email address/website.
(06.09.09 02:44 PM)
Nathan Michael :
Love these images, Fred! And Mark, can you share with us a link to your site...I'd like to see your work since you apparently have impeccable taste. Quite frankly, I feel like it was a shallow & jealous gesture.
(06.09.09 02:31 PM)
Lisa:
Beautifully stated - youth is all about longing, and the desire for a "magical" future (one that we are so sure we can achieve when we are this age) Just because we tend to put our "youthful fantasies" aside as we get older, doesn't mean we still can't revel in them every once in a while and re-inspire ourselves...
(06.09.09 02:29 PM)
Brianna:
I get it - we have stacks off these from our teenage years. I liked this post :)
(06.09.09 02:13 PM)
heather:
I always itched for that AE beach spirit, but I grew up far from the beach, closer to the mountains. We embraced ours with hand knit beanies and hot cocoa. Nevertheless, I am loving this creamy beachy goodness, (love the Picasso quote!).
(06.09.09 01:09 PM)
Briony:
i never really looked at the catalogs as a kid so i guess i missed out on this escape but your images are beautful and do portray the ideals of youth, fun and of course summer.
(06.09.09 12:47 PM)
FRED EGAN:
Mark <<< Yes, I am serious with this crap. It's called writing. And yes, it's a bit pretentious BECAUSE I was 15 years old. Try to view it in context.
(06.09.09 12:42 PM)
Mark:
"Their world transcended mine. I became one of them."
Are you serious with this crap?
A bit pretentious for these boring, catalog-fodder images, but I'm sure you mean it.
(06.09.09 12:32 PM)
Dennis Bullock:
I always think these shoots of yours are so cool. Cut another watermelon last night!

the brothers castleberry
Sometimes I lay awake at night conjuring up a master plan on how to keep my boys from growing up. It'll be grand. Genius. Priceless, even. I'll bottle it up and sell it to every parent. Until I can freeze the maturation of children, I'll just have to keep photographing them.

Graciete:
So, so true - I too simply want to forever carry my almost seven year old daughter in my pocket... but isn't it truly amazing that no matter how much they grow we always have room to carry them in our heart? It's so bittersweet because with one hand we desperately hold on to their babyhood, infancy and childhood and yet it's such a privilege and comfort to be able to guide them with the other and watch them grow, happy and healthy...
These photos are absolutely beautiful as are your boys.
(12.05.08 04:28 AM)
morgan roof:

backwoods getaway
I am now two degrees from one of my photographic gods, Bruce Weber.
Last week I headed East to create an outdoors shoot in the hills of North Carolina. Working with Brandon Russell, one of the carpenters from Trading Spaces, and a former A&F model, we spent several days together in the Appalachian Mountains bumpin' extremely loud tunes, off-roadin' and flat out having a blast.
I have to give a huge shout out to Jeff Holt, my producer, for pulling this shoot together on our shoestring budget. It would not have happened without him. Thank you, thank you, thank you Jeff!
Jenny McCann:
Fred, I haven't visited your blog in a while and just saw these. They're amazing! The models are gorgeous and your imagery is perfect. Wow! You are on the road to big things!
(03.19.09 10:14 AM)
Deb Cull:
Love this shoot. I've actually been planning a similar shoot concept - maybe in the everglades or the beach in Florida. I finally have something to show my husband so he has an idea about what I've been talking about for weeks. Wonderful work!
(02.25.09 03:03 PM)
stephanie McBride:

Hey Fred. I love NC. The photos are wonderful! I was a guide at a youth camp there for 2 summers and got to spend night and day there so it is almost home to me. We raised pigs and our own veggies. I spent many of nights sleeping in a cabin and making breakfast in the wood burning stove. I chopped a ton of wood and slept with one too many mice those summers. The girls look a lot cleaner than i did!

Awesome shoot and I would have to agree that these shots are right out of an AF catalog . . . I'd love to know more about this shoot like what you shot with and if you're feeling generous, what you used for the post-processing. But once again, these are some awesome shots!

akil bennett
Akil Bennett hails from Houston, TX where he photographs weddings and portraits. Although his origins are in videography, he's making the transition over to photography. He's a smart guy in that he understands how important his personal image is to his brand (probably something he picked up at my workshop last Spring). We descended upon Austin, TX for two days and had a good time getting to know each other.
Swing by his blog and check out what he's been up to. For the movie lovers, Akil writes up reviews on recent flicks he's enjoyed. Drop him some comment love below so he knows he's lookin' good.
...oh yeah...and he's single. Carry on.

Ayesha:
oooo Akil is a hottie... definitely will show him some blog love ;). The pictures and colors are HAUTE. My favorite is the one where Akil is jumping over the chair and second row first picture.

While taking holiday on the West coast, the Wrights wanted to take part of it back home to England with them. They embody a great sense of style, an open love for each other and carry a fun-loving aura about them. Beautiful people, beautiful locations...I had a great time doing my thing.

marisa holmes
Marisa Holmes is a photographer hailing from Orange County. She's been working on some cool stuff for her wedding/portrait business and needed some fun lifestyle images to reflect her charisma. Watch out for her in 2008/2009 and you can always catch what she's up to on her blog.
*Crystal Cove is a really rad place to shoot but they require permits if you are going to put on any production while shooting...we got kicked out for a lack of one.

september:
i heart crystal cove. one of my all-time favorite places to run, chill and take in a sunset. hopefully you found the underground path leading from across the street...? cool art covers the tunnel walls painted by school kids. beautiful.
(07.16.08 07:19 PM)
Maya:
Ahhh, I love these! Marisa shot my wedding in June and she was such a rockstar-- I could not be happier with the photos. And I love these shots of her. Not only does she look uber hot, but so happy. I can't wait to see what you have planned, Marisa! And great job Fred :)
(07.15.08 03:04 PM)
Melissa McClure:
Those rock Fred! I love the last shot, she looks so happy, I can tell you two had a blast!
(07.15.08 01:58 PM)

Seattle was good to me this past weekend. Good food, good time with some friends and a great shoot. I scripted this concept of two BFF's in the midst of their West coast senior road-trip. We drop in on them during the morning of their stay at a retro boutique hotel in Seattle. Michelle Moore helped produce this shoot, pulling together hair, make-up and models in a matter of days. We also shot some behind the scenes footage.
KyleBanes:
Straight-Up Fred Egan. No need to describe your photography to anyone... just show them this post. Its Young, Fun, Cool and Creative. The epitome of FredEgan.

sunday
I think this is unofficially college reunion week for me (Sunday and I went to college together). He lives in Vegas and we hooked up for some portfolio shots while I was at WPPI. Working with Sunday is fun stuff...he's talented and he gives me what I want when I ask and comes up with some great ideas himself. We started in my hotel room at the Wynn and ran around from there. A rad character all around. I mean, he's rad if not for the sole reason that he's sporting a striped onesie.

caroline
Before Christmas arrived, I headed up to Winterpark, CO with my clients Jeff and Caroline. Eight other friends were also in tow for some ridin' and a quick shoot with Caroline. The snow was great on the mountain and I definitely ripped it up. All week I was hoping it would snow lightly for the shoot...naturally the morning of, fluffy, large snowflakes lazily fell from the overcast sky.
