jess@studio3z:
just saw your tweet above and since I am not friends with you in FB or twitter, I decided to post here. If you are not already listening to Greg Laswell, you need to. His music is great, words greater, and considering what you like- you may really dig. Especially check out his "Three flights" album.

You do not know how long I look for "different" or up and coming music. I love checking your lists for a taste of something different. Thanks for sharing. :)

I'll see your goodies: death cab, mgmt, k-os, the weepies, she&him, noah and the whale...and i'll raise you these other goodies: my morning jacket, caribou, brandi carlile, m.ward, joel plaskett, the champion heartache, jenny lewis, bright eyes, band of horses, ray lamontage, ana egge, the stables...and that is enough for now. much love.

Piggy-backing off of last month's Blitzen Trapper genius mix, Ra Ra Riot's The Rhumb Line has been in my collection since it's release. It's only been just recently that I've cozied up next to it and gotten comfortable. Not only do they compose poppy indie rock tunes, but they boast an understated sense of prep style while doing it. Also check out Santogold, Foals and what many a critics have deemed the best album of the year, T.V. On the Radio's Dear Science.

Hitting the "genius" button in my iTunes library on Blitzen Trapper's Furr yields a lineup of indie folk singer/songwriters that transport you to another time. The Portland sextet are in good company with the likes of Dr. Dog, Conor Oberst, Ra Ra Riot and fellow North-westerners, Fleet Foxes. Give some of these guys a listen, you may like what you hear.

12.30.08 spoon is genius
Here at FRED EGAN, photography isn't the only area of interest worth gabbing about. In fact, I hope that's obvious from this year's posts. Art, fashion, music and of course, photography, span the gamut of relative topics worth discussing. In an effort to not only bring you new music I'm bumping, I'm hitting Apple's "Genius" button on some of my favorite new artists to also bring some older tunes into the spotlight.

Spoon's The Way We Get By is such an anthem jam that gets your head bobbin' and your lips singing along to Britt Daniel's raspy vocals. Check out the rest of the artists and enjoy the ones you're already listening to. Cheers.

12.02.08 one zero
My forefinger methodically pulled back and forth on the scroll wheel as I scanned my iTunes library for the answer. As I was wrapping up a phone consultation with Kellan Studios last night, they capped our video iChat with the time honored question, "If you could only listen to one album the rest of your life, which one would it be?" If you're like me, I'm more apt to provide an answer to, "What's your favorite album this week?" Movies, music, photographs...they all exist on this whimsical carousel of current taste; however, there is one album that I need to listen to for the rest of my life.

One Zero by Derek Webb is essentially the gospel of Jesus Christ in 10 unadulterated, brutally honest songs. Stripped to just a voice and a guitar, the message is given center stage. Loving the poor, grace, politics, the great commission, the struggle between loving money and loving God...Derek spares no expense. This is the album I need to hear everyday...the gospel I need to live everyday.

one-zero-acoustic.jpg
"The truth is I need you just like the air I breathe,
just like a freight train needs the tracks beneath.
I'd rather suffer my whole life,
and be this rich man's wife.
If loving you means suffering."

-Derek Webb

funny I was blasting old school Caedmon's Call this morning...
(12.04.08 09:19 AM)

'whimsical carousel of current taste...' there are quotes that, when i hear them, i kick myself for not coming up with them first. that, my dear, would be one of them...
(12.04.08 02:10 AM)
Kyle Barnes:

Derek Webb is one of the most honest and inspirational Christian artists out there. I also appreciate his band Cademons Call, but i'm more into his solo stuff.
(12.03.08 01:45 PM)
wrecklessgirl:
i need to grab this album...sounds amazing. perhaps those who haven't heard of him---have heard of the fantastic caedmon's call, the band he was a member of during the 90's and sporadically involved with throughout the millenium ;)

Susan P.:
It's so refreshing to see someone using their blog as a platform to voice their love for the Lord and desire to serve Him (without being pushy or judging) in the hope that just one more person might come to know Him! God bless you! P.S. You are a great photographer and I have enjoyed following your blog and Mammoth Men adventures :)
(12.03.08 12:46 PM)
Ryan and Kelly:
So glad that question struck a chord with you. Truly and awesome artist and record. Ryan's vote is for anything Rich Mullins....I would have to go along that lines too. Thanks again Fred, we loved every second of talking with you and are still praying through your advice. Keep keepin' it real.
(12.03.08 12:35 PM)
Tim Halberg:
Dude... rock on, glad you're so open/straight forward about your faith. I'm always amazed at how many Christians there are in this industry. I've got some older stuff of Derek, but I'll have to check out this album.

Sarah D.:
You're a Christian? And a photographer? AND a Derek Webb fan???!!!????!??? You've just moved up onto my heroes list. Derek is the best. His wife Sandra is amazing, too. I saw them in concert two months ago for the first time, which was amazing. His music stirs my heart. Thanks for blogging about it.
(12.03.08 12:28 PM)
David Blakeman:
I'm glad you can be honest about your faith on your blog, Fred. That's something that deserves validation. I sometimes think there aren't any other photographers in this world that love Jesus. I'm glad to know that there's a couple out there. Keep rockin' & rollin'.
(12.03.08 12:23 PM)

11.04.08 rue royale
Rue-Royale.jpg

Hailing from Chicago, Brookln and Ruth Dekker make up one of my favorite indie-folk duos right now, Rue Royale. Their story resonates with me because it loosely mirrors my pursuit into photography. Their whispered harmonies will weave their way into your mind and heart. Pick them both up today at Amazon.mp3 or iTunes.

The world needed to discover the tales of William Fitzsimmons long before I did. I say this in all gravity, this is more than likely one of the best folk albums I've ever experienced. Quite possibly the best album I've ever listened to, period. He touches on the human condition more eloquently and honestly than anyone I know.

Jory and I were talking the other night while singing out loud to his brilliant tunes, and I realized one of the reasons I've formed such an affinity for his songs...they are not lyrically abstract.

The Sparrow and the Crow.jpg
It's as if he reached down into my broken heart and created this honest beauty from it. The Sparrow and the Crow rarely plays without tears accompanying Fitzsimmon's delicately crafted songs. I believe that's why I'm enthralled with his latest project: the tears serve as an outward manifestation of pain...and the pain, in turn, reminds me that I'm still alive. He's managed to document the relational progression between two people over 12 songs...brutal honesty, consequence, forgiveness, hope, etc. Hands down, the most impressive concept album to grace my iTunes library to date.

Last weekend, Jory Cordy and I dashed down to Austin, Texas for the legend...wait for it...DARY music festival. Sweltering heat, dirt filled air and live music define ACL's festival every Fall. Just to name a few of the rad artists we saw...

-Vampire Weekend
-Patty Griffin
-MGMT
-Jose Gonzalez
-Iron & Wine
-Hot Chip
-Tegan & Sara
-Connor Oberst and the Mountain Valley Band
-Fleet Foxes
-Priscilla Ahn

Best solo performance: Jose Gonzalez (the man was incredible on his classical guitar)

Best band performance: MGMT (THE BAND to see at ACL this year. When the intro to Kids ripped open, the masses erupted.)

acl-snaps.jpg
Some random self portraits while wandering around Zilker Park. There were so many music goers at ACL that many of the bikes were parked in the trees.

Austin City Limits is less than a month away and I'm pretty excited to be experiencing my first one...I know, I've lived in Texas all this time-what's wrong with me??? I have no excuse other than festivals haven't really been my scene...until now. Once I return with some photos, then the jury will be in on the experience. Until then, I threw this playlist together of the artists I'm looking forward to seeing in Austin, TX (exit RSS readers to view the iMix).

Additional survival tips for ACL Fest: buy a camelbak and throw it in a backpack. Bring a bandana -- wet, it'll keep your head (or neck) cool, or in a pinch, act as a dust mask.

you are going to LOVE it! My first one was in 2004 - first semester at UT. 3 days of non-stop, on-your-feet, badass music :) Just take a hat, shades, buy tons of water, bring a backpack to carry all of that water, and wear shorts and a tank - seriously, when you get closer to the stages, everyone is arm to arm, basically spooning. Everyone's friendly, though! You should try and see Mason Jennings - he's amazing live.
(08.27.08 12:30 AM)
John:
If you get a chance, also check out Robert Earl Keen and Drive By Truckers. Looking forward to your photos and followup!

*RSS readers...please come to my blog to view this weeks iMix and expand your musical palette*

This week's mix thrives on a collision between alternative music and electronic elements such as keys, synth and voice manipulation. Born out of a need to bring you the Black Kids, AlternaTronic flows quite nicely. Notable favorites of mine include The Bird and the Bees, MGMT, Vampire Weekend and The Ting Tings...OK, they're all good or else they wouldn't be on the mix ;-)

It pays to give your two cents. Bob Pattison is the 700th commenter and has a $10 iTunes or Amazon gift card coming their way so he can use what music knowledge he's garnered through these iMixes here and purchase some good DRM-free music. He's a wedding/portrait photographer, check him out...also, good to meet you in Vegas Bob!

What music have you guys been discovering lately?

07.29.08 "parking" mix
Music touches us all...our relational moments especially. In fact, a single song can trigger the memory of a first kiss, or the first time you tried to put your arm around a girl and had to abort to an over-exaggerated yawn. This week's iMix salutes those moments...and will hopefully aid in creating new ones (my RSS readers may need to visit my blog to view the mix). Just load these up on your iPod, grab the person you can't live without and go park somewhere (Sidenote: if you live on the west coast please go park on a cliff overlooking the Pacific Ocean at sunset...for me). Here's to fogging up windows...

Even though I've been on hiatus with my iMixes due to the Mammoth Men trip of the year, a wedding in the Bahamas and getting work done for my awesome clients, HIGH FIVES go to Erin Renee and Dan Doan for being the 500th and 600th commenter on the blog. $10 in iTunes or Amazon gift certificates are coming your way-WHAMMY!!! It pays to give your two cents.

Hi Fred. First comment here although I have been following your blog a lot recently. Love your work, I find it very inspiring... anyway, what I am posting on this thread for is to say that if you like the Hotel Cafe stuff, you should check out Tom McRae. www.myspace.com/tommcrae x

Now, people often think that a good mix should rise and fall but people are wrong. It should be all emo baby! Now prepare yourselves for an audio journey into the white hot center of deep diary-like outpourings of emotion. The perfect serving for a rainy day indoors while cozied up with a book...or for commiserating over a girl. Boys & girls, I present you my "popular" emo mix...

*And a hug goes to the person who can tell me what comedy sitcom I loosely ripped my entry from...and 5 minutes of uninterrupted eye contact to the person who can name the song featured on his mix!

And as always...every 100th commenter receives $10 in Amazon or iTunes music :)

I have a short attention span when it comes to emo. So much stuff I'd rather be listening to instead. I'm just not that into it. I could probably only listen to three of those songs in one sitting. Always interesting to see what others are listening to though- even the stuff I'm not into.

Pop-punk...it makes your head bop. And this week's mix will do a brilliant job of just that. If you're in your RSS reader, hop on over here to peruse the iMix. Sorry this didn't come out last Tuesday. I've been on the road alot and not to mention my high speed internet was out for 4 days last week (bloody CHARTER!).

In other music news, Marco Wang left the 400th comment and has $10 of music from Amazon/iTunes comin' to him...it pays to give your two cents (and be a Facebook fan) :) As always, what's some of your favorite pop-punk???

05.20.08 hotel cafe imix
This week's iMix features artists that have been touring on the Hotel Cafe tour that is the brainchild of Cary Brothers. I caught the tour as they came through Dallas and I'm crushing pretty hard on Sara Barielles. She's pretty flippin' cute on stage and her siren-esque voice hypnotizes me. Their Dallas show was quite enjoyable. You might not see the iMix in RSS.

So in other music related news, Ann Baker just received a $10 Amazon gif certificate by contributing the 200th comment to my blog since it went LIVE last week. Congratulations! The 300th commenter will receive their choice of an iTunes or Amazon gift card (wherever your prefer to purchase your DRM-free music). Good luck!

The Hotel Cafe Tour rocked! It came to my part of town a couple months ago. I got some sweet shots! No Sara on this part of the tour but she came to Syracuse University a couple days later so I got to see her for the second time. She pretty much rocks my life!

A huge Texas thanks is in order to everyone who's stopped by my new blog since it went LIVE last week. Your comments are flippin' rad and I love getting to know some of you that stop by. You guys have already racked up over 100 comments! So, being the avid music lover that I am, I'm giving away a $10 iTunes gift certificate* to the 200th commenter (and the 300th, 400th, 500th and so on) :D

iTunesgc.png

All you have to do is:

A. be the 200th commenter (and don't forget to input your email address)
B. become a fan on my Facebook fan page (of course, you'll need to have a facebook account)
C. check back often to see who's won!

You'll notice that I've actually commented quite a bit as well...due largely in part to my desire to create a conversation on my blog. If you have a question for me, ask it in the comments section instead of sending me an email. This way, everyone benefits from your curiosity.

*in giving away iTunes gift certificates I am solely advocating purchasing iTunes Plus music from the Apple iTunes music store. If you decide to ignorantly moronically purchase lower quality/DRM songs from iTunes in which you have to enter a blast'd password just to listen to your music...well then, I have no sympathy for you and you've learned nothing from reading this blog.
