-How 'bout them Cowboys?! We beat the best team in the NFL...this week. Our consistency is just way off since we tend to compete on the same level as our opponent of the week.

-I was in Aspen over the weekend snowboarding with Murphy...Murphy's Law, that is. Among other untimely events, I sliced open my leg on my friend's board. There was bone showing people...not good. Five stitches later, I racked up my highest score on Muddled to date (453 on Normal difficulty).

-While passing through Denver, I made it a point to stop by Swing Thai for some of the most amazing Thai food to grace my palette. You might be familiar with my affinity for Cholada in Malibu, CA; well Swing Thai is just as clutch. Everything is good. Katie Thurmes first introduced Swing to me...thanks again girl!

-Speaking of great food, I'm a sucker for fish & chips. In fact, it's probably my favorite meal outside of Chipotle's veggie bol. While I was spending some time with my dear foodie friend, we discovered this dive called Zeke's Fish & Chips in Fort Worth, TX. Seriously some of the most amazing batter I've encountered. The icing on the cake? It's right down the street from my place!

-OK, for real this time: The All-American Rejects have dropped their 3rd studio album. It's $2.99 on Amazon this week...good time to nab it.

-My buddy Scott Neumeyer sent me Ghost Town on DVD last week. I thought it might be kind of cheesy but I was in stitches at Ricky Gervais' performance alone. Although a fan of the American rendition of the The Office, Gervais' true talent in the pool of dry humor shines bright here.

-While on my way to Aspen, we stopped at Glenwood Hot Spings to experience the therapeutic waters of Colorado...it was so fantastic.

-Lastly, Fake FredEgan's Twitter following is up to 119...not too bad. Check him out. It wouldn't be half as funny if most of it wasn't an exaggeration of the truth.

Hi Fred! I'm a Colorado native, so I share your LOOOOVE for Swing Thai! I always get the same thing too. I also can attest to the radness that is the hot springs. Glad you enjoyed our wonderful state! :) Boo on the snowboard injury though. I once but my lip on my own board (don't ask) and left a huge red snow pile at Copper Mountain, so yeah, I feel your pain. Oh and GO BRONCOS!!! ;)

-The Dallas Cowboys are just not staying healthy this year; as a result, we are not winning as much as we should be. Although Sunday's game displayed a good effort on defense for 53 minutes, games last 60. Our wild card spot looks...well, wild at best.

-As the holdiay season rolls in, that means I get to roll out holiday playlists while musicians are churning out new holiday inspired tunes. If you don't own Sufjan Stevens' Songs for Christmas, it's a real singer/songwriter holiday treat.

-I delivered a gorgeous 50 page 11" x 14" wedding album to Jeff and Caroline over the weekend. For those of you that have already booked your wedding collections with me, it's not too late to upgrade to the 11" x 14".

-Thank you all for the kind comments regarding the images of my boys. I am so proud to be their dad. I really appreciate all of you that commented for the first time.

-Driving is fun again. I've filled up the FJ for $24 over the past month. We can all thank the warm winter for that one.

-Many of you have thanked me for recommending Derek Webb's One Zero acoustic album. I'm glad I could do it. As a reminder, you can pick it up here.

-Hip Hop dance has been an absolute blast so far. It caters to my affinity for music, musicals, fitness and being awesome.

-This week I'm tackling #42 of 101 on my lifestyle list: Learn to tie a bow-tie. Apparently it's similar to tying your shoe. Wish me luck as I get tied up in one of my favorite new accessories.

I don't do movie reviews...usually. Truthfully, it's because most screenplays aren't worth the paper they're printed on. Slumdog Millionaire is different. Very different. It's human. It's real. M.I.A. contributes to the colorful soundtrack to which this compelling story of the human spirit is set.

Easily the best film I've experienced this year...and one of my favorites of all time. Go see it at an indie theatre near you...run.

-So I've taken a vacation from my blog for the last two weeks; however, if you follow me on Twitter then you have the gist of what's been going down in my scene. If you're not familiar with Twitter, I won't slight you for it...but I would encourage you to see what the mini-blogging app is all about.

-Many of you followed the third installment of the MAMMOTH MEN adventures. Let me tell you, it was insane. Every trip the relationships with my best friends grows deeper. I just want to personally thank all of you for your input on our journey. Your votes, contest submissions and comments had us in stitches and smiles throughout our man-cation.

mammothmen20081118_0022.jpg
I treasure these man-cations due to the sole fact that it allows me to take a step back and view life from a distance. To breathe it in...to feel it in my bones...pulsing through my veins. The camaraderie and brotherhood is priceless. So when I Twitter "Life is too short for only three weeks of vacation," this is what I'm talking about. Below is one of my favorite images from the trip...Monument Valley at dawn.
mammothmen20081118_0024.jpg

-My Cowboys won on Thanksgiving...Romo's back and they're looking like playoff contenders. Now we just need to figure out how to win our first playoff game in 10 years. Easy, right? Wrong. Remember Seattle 2006.

-Hands down, the winner of this holiday season's ad campaign bombardment is none other than Gap. As if I'm not already infatuated with great photographs of famous faces...Gap has managed to squeeze a ridiculous number of familiar faces into their winter duds. And to boot, they look good in them too...everywhere from billboard's to magazines to TV spots, it makes you want to be them. A sign of any successful campaign effort. But alas, I'm a Rugby man.

*sidenote: Will Forte is a funny, funny man.

-By the way, the above ad was scanned in with my new CanonScan 5600F which I've fallen in serious like with. Why do I think a scanner is the coolest thing in the last 5 minutes? Probably because I've never owned one outside of those all-in-one models. To me, those were always like minivans touting themselves as SUVs...it just doesn't work. I'm looking forward to scanning & importing all my childhood photos into iPhoto (#027 on my 101 in 1,001 Lifestyle List).

-The Decemberists are returning this Spring with a fairy-tale concept album. Long one of my favorite folk groups, Colin Meloy and company are crafting a rock opera of sorts around a woman named Margaret who is ravaged by a shape-shifting animal; her lover, William, who is desperate for the two of them to be reunited; a forest queen; and a villainous rake. Concept albums receive my utmost respect, even if the story sounds a bit...off.

-Lastly, congratulations to photographer Jennifar Detar for winning my Shootsac during the MAMMOTH MEN trip!

Just found your blog and website through twitter. Had to post on this because I've torn out all the GAP ads from this year and put them in my inspiration 3-ring binder. I love the simplicity - they let personalities shine through.

-I picked up a limited edition (142 of 300) photography book by Bruce Weber for Ruehl No. 925. The last time he shot one for Ruehl I waited too long and missed out. All the images were shot in New York City with black & white film, Weber's trademark. It's everything about photography I fell in love with 15 years ago.

-My vote was for Ron Paul.

-TwitterSearch.com The coolest thing for Twitter...for at least the next 5 minutes. Twitter made searchable.

-Mammoth Men 3 begins November 16th. New brand, a couple new dudes, new adventures. Check out the trailer for a taste of the shenanigans to come.

-Notable album release this Tuesday: The All-American Rejects's much anticipated When the World Comes Down. Much is riding on the Oklahomans' junior pop-punk effort and I'm looking forward to accompanying their infectious licks with my air drums skillz. (I just found out they have postponed the release date until December).

-My Lifestyle List adventure #38 starts this Thursday: Hip-Hop dance class. This is my idea of cardio.

-My oldest son's birthday was Sunday and I looked like a hero because my buddy Scott Neumyer got a copy of "laugh out loud" Kung Fu Panda DVD in my hands before its release. Thank you sir!

-My boys earned their green belts in karate last week. In order to lure them to this precipice, I baited them with iPod Shuffles. Their out-of-tune High School Musical karaoke is music to my ears. Next up, blue belts.

In the early wintery months of 2008, eight celebrated, award-winning and downright awesome photographers from all over the country grabbed their sticks to ride the mountains of Mammoth, California. This marked the beginning of what is now known as...wait for it...The Mammoth Men. What ensued during that getaway was a week filled with adventure, spontaneity, hijinks and storied tales. A bond was forged amongst these men and a commitment made to doing it again, and doing it often! During the Summer of 2008, The Mammoth Men hit the road again. Only this time, they loaded up 10 photographers in a Prevost rock star tour bus, drove for five days up the California Coast and shared it with everyone via their traffic happy blog. So much so that their blog readers actually got to choose their day-to-day adventures while watching them play out the next day. The blog following continued even after the West coast trip ended and garnered media attention in the blogosphere. Well, the guys are back for their much anticipated third installment of The Mammoth Men. Watch the mayhem unfold as these 12 photographers board their Prevost and head into the American Southwest to document their Route 66 road-trip. Packed with more guys, more miles and more camaraderie, it's not just a roadtrip...it's a lifestyle.

the allure to your blog was the Mammoth Men 3 Trailer (first time Fred Egan buyer) beyond humorous, I might add. the true reason I stayed (for the last 40 minutes, I do have things to, do I promise) was your simple honesty. you have skills with your camera, but your person rocks! I suppose that would assist in your photog skills, but that aside, thanks for your insight to the business (ie business socks). your words are the best I have found so far (new one in the business). -Heroes is getting old...in fact, it sucks now. The story lines play too much like Days of our Lives and too many characters are coming back from the dead. Even worse, it's starting to feel like LOST but probably less interesting.

-Just got back from Cancun, Mexico last night...photographed an intimate wedding where BFF Kyle accompanied me. My clients were amazing and several past clients were also in attendance. Good times in the Sun all around.

-Mammoth Men 3 is just around the bend. Frankly, I'm very much looking forward to it. We've revamped our brand (you might want to grab the nearest cup cause our photo blog is likely to nail you right in the junk), recruited a couple more dudes and found out a new route to get out kicks on (that's a clue, so get hip to this kindly tip). It's going to be LEGEND...[wait for it]...DARY!

-My Dallas Cowboys...against the Giants, what can I say? What a relief that we have a bye next Sunday.

-Blogging is dead (photo-blogging may be a different story). The blogosphere is suffocating in a corporate plastic bag that reads "this is not a toy." Circa 2002, blogging gave the "every man" a platform to be heard on. Whatever you wrote about would rank substantially high on Google. Now? Well, now corporate blogs who post 15-30 posts a day have drowned out the "every man" voice that made blogging special. Cue Twitter. Your voice is personal again...and immediate; however, watch for Twitter to go the way of blogging due to corporate interference. Don't be flattered the Tyra Show is now following you on Twitter. They just want you to reciprocate so they can start sending you junk tweets.

-I'm planning on creating a shoot in NYC, much like I did with Backwoods Getaway in North Carolina. While I'm storyboarding ideas I can't help but wonder what kind of story would YOU create in NYC??? Maybe I'll try and incorporate them into my story...then it could be "our" story.

-Phone consultations...still rockin' 'em.

-While in Cancun this weekend, I crossed off #35 on my 101 in 1,001 Lifestyle list: Learn to do a standing back flip. Who has two thumbs and can do a backflip now...THIS GUY!

-This weekend a young woman said I resembled Pete Wentz. Ladies, what do you think? (And if I do, is that even a good thing???)

Here's my NYC story: Pack lots of fabulous heels & cute clothes thinking I'm going to be like Sex & the City girls trapsing all over Manhattan. After day one of walking 10 blocks on 5th Ave, duck into a shoe store & buy a pair of Pumas. Then buy a sweatshirt at AE because those coats are way too heavy to carry around when not outside in the 35 deg.weather. Not as glamorous as I imagined, but a much happier NY experience.

i'm going to have a spread a little "comment hate" :) haha...jk!!! what i mean, fred e., is that i half-heartedly agree with your (and the referenced article's) statement that blogging is dead. i think that artists (especially) continue to gain much from blogging (if not, solely based on the need to create and share and express and breath out that which is their life--art). what better canvas is there, aside from the other avenues they are already taking for their career? i can see why certain bloggers may find themselves suffocated by the onset of bigwig corps hogging the limelight...however, in the artist's world (not just photographers, but poets, painters, world-travelers) blogging is a perfectly suitable space to create and inspire. simply, contrary to the article's statement that [the point of a blog is to get noticed by google results] this is not completely true for an artist using his blog as a palette and canvas. a blog supersedes a gallery/website any day. not to mention, the basics of networking, which you have already established in previous fredegan.com/blog posts :) not to mention...if you automatically get rss feeds from your blog into facebook...isn't that sort of the same thing? then, for argument's sake, facebook becomes a blog. with email capabilities. which my intense debate commenting system on my blog provides anyway. soooo....needless to say, once again, very interesting article. very debatable statement. and that is what art should be...debatable, distinguishable, and provoking. thank you for sharing. i, for one, am glad i stop by to visit every now and then. :) <3k.

Hey Fred! I'm a long time blog stalker, first time commenter :) Your planned shoot in NYC has totally got me thinking....what if you told the story of a small town girl moving to the big city of NYC to follow her dreams? Yeah,...I know...kinda sounds like the plot for the flick "Coyote Ugly" but I'm sure you could come up with something way cool! Keep up the awesome work :)

Every Monday I'll congregate around the water cooler to discuss/gossip about miscellaneous topics and events and provide a week-in-review.

-Tuesday night, Cesar, Ashley, Jory and I raved on stage with Girl Talk...and yes, that's Jory on my shoulders around the 0:56 mark. I told Cesar not to put this on YouTube, so of course he did. Great night of LIVE music.

-The Cowboys are on the verge of just collapsing under the helm of Brad Johnson + injuries; however, they did manage to beat a very good team in the Bucs on Sunday. It wasn't pretty but it was a "W". Kudos to Brad Johnson for not making any mistakes.

-Thursday night Kyle and I headed to the Jason Mraz show. It got off to a slow start but I met some new friends and enjoyed my existing ones. "Gimmie gimmie that high ten!"

-Saw High School Musical 3 Saturday with my boys...good times. I like musicals...of the theatre and film variety. I'm omnivorous in my music consumption, what can I say?

-The Mammoth Men are embarking on their third installment of the Man Trip in November. We did some major planning last week. So if you enjoyed following along the previous trip, we promise not to disappoint this time around...we might even be giving away free stuff-just sayin'.

-I dropped my iPhone for the second time. It sucked.

-I'm getting a real kick out of the design and functionality of the Facebook app for the iPhone...I'm actually spending time in it. As for MySpace...well, I keep ignoring that account.

-Phone consultations have been going really well thus far. Some really good questions have created good conversation in addition to new friends. In many instances, I've recalled my beginnings during the consultations and it's reminded me to be thankful for where I'm currently at. I've spent thousands of dollars on continuing education + personal experience that I'm willing to share over the phone. I've still got a few spots open for any takers.

-Sunday I was notified Taylor Christian Jones is my 545th Twitter follower...so I guess I'll keep Twittering. It gives me something to do while waiting in line for my veggie burrito bol at Chipotle (btw, I respond to every @FredEgan you throw at me).

-All week I've been playing Copeland's Your Are My Sunshine on repeat...it's quite grand.

Linhbergh <<< Thanks for sharing your thoughts with me :) I'm not sure if you are familiar with the "through the viewfinder" technique but it's defined as taking a picture of any subject through the viewfinder of any camera with another camera. So I can appreciate your opinion that the framing takes away from the image, but that's just how the image is created.

Fred, it was so great to meet you the other night! Definitely let me know if you come through A-town! Lovin' the second shot there. :)

I absolutely love the first one. The only thing I'm not liking is the distressed/film framing. I personally think it takes away from the image. I see what direction you're going for, but somehow it just isn't coming across like, I think, how it should. The second one is fantastic though. The framing works well here.
(10.20.08 05:13 PM)

While both of the shots are amazing, the second is just downright inspiring. I dig it so much I wish I taken it. Never have posted on here, but always check in to see the "latest and greatest of Fred". Keep it up.

10.11.08 success...
I was listening to the Chicago based interior designer Nate Berkus on XM radio the other day. He was interviewing Alessandra Branca, an Itlalian-born interior designer, on creating your own signature style. There were several great take-aways; however, one thing popped out at me regarding success as Alessandra shared her story.

As Alessandra's reputation became more prominent and the demand for her talent greater, her mother mentioned that success isn't achieved when the projects/clients are picking you...but when you are picking the projects/clients. I thought that was extremely insightful.

How do you define success?

Last weekend, Jory Cordy and I dashed down to Austin, Texas for the legend...wait for it...DARY music festival. Sweltering heat, dirt filled air and live music define ACL's festival every Fall. Just to name a few of the rad artists we saw...

-Vampire Weekend
-Patty Griffin
-MGMT
-Jose Gonzalez
-Iron & Wine
-Hot Chip
-Tegan & Sara
-Connor Oberst and the Mountain Valley Band
-Fleet Foxes
-Priscilla Ahn

Best solo performance: Jose Gonzalez (the man was incredible on his classical guitar)

Best band performance: MGMT (THE BAND to see at ACL this year. When the intro to Kids ripped open, the masses erupted.)

Some random self portraits while wandering around Zilker Park. There were so many music goers at ACL that many of the bikes were parked in the trees.

I've seen this Dove film clip (exit RSS readers if needed) more times than I can count. While I never tire of viewing the end result, I'm torn...inside. This ideal of beauty isn't the whole truth and yet I want it...look for it, desire it...I want to photograph it. Whenever I work with models, I find this battle of perception/deception harder to fight as I'm immersed in a world of conditioned ideal beauty. Everyone's thin, has good bone structure and has not a care in the world...and the rest of the public tries to conform to that standard via plastic surgery, eating disorders and limb lengthening surgery. I feel it's a deception partly responsible for the countless insecurities we, women especially, wrestle with.

Can this industry (avg. female model: 5'8"/115lbs) harmlessly co-exist with the real world in which the average woman is 5'3"/162lbs? Or is the industry the true ideal and we're just not measuring up?

On the other hand, this topic also begs the question, "Do we really want to exchange the distorted version of reality we've created for the truth?" Do we want to look at ugly people? If we're honest with ourselves, we may or may not like our answer.

Post a Comment Send To A Friend digg del.icio.us technorati
emily:
My brother. if that is not a timeless question for all existence than I don't know what is. We live in a brainless, ignorant world. As for truth, we all have our own truth and acceptance of. But truth itself, as a societal whole, is a million different deceptions that will never unite...to an acceptance of any perception.
(09.15.08 11:28 AM)
Christina:
As some who falls into the 'ideal' range in terms of size (b/c of genetics, not by choice), I'm actually glad when I see real women instead of rail thin models in advertising campaigns. I know I don't look like a model and wouldn't want to -- at least by being average, its my brains and talents noticed first :) Add in that most clothing designers designed for the 'ideal' -- forgetting that average women actually eat and have curves. I have to agree with Melissa though, beauty is in the eye of the target audience.
(09.09.08 08:33 AM)
MARCO:
If I think that I'm better looking than everyone else, do I have a perception or a deception problem?
(09.08.08 11:13 PM)
Melissa:
Both of those videos are completely powerful. A photographer in the city where I live recently petitioned for "average" women to be a part of a photo shoot for a new bridal store. She requested brunette, blonde, and redhead models to contact her if they were interested. The catch: they had to be between 25 and 35 years old, 5'4-5'7, and 105-115 lbs. I was shocked! ...If I was perusing bridal store websites and campagins I'd feel pretty bad looking at women who were that thin as I was trying to search for my perfect dress for my perfect day! But on the other hand, the spread was going to be publicly displayed as a marketing campaign, so of course the store owners and photographer are going ot want "model" types. It got me thinking, where do we draw the line? what is real beauty? Perhaps it's just as much to say that in the minds of some people: beauty is in the eye of the target audience. --M

I learned how to drive a manual while I was living in England. The very first time was when I was in Wales and I had to drive, on the right side of the road, on the right side of the car, shifting with my left hand down this tiny winding mountain road with a cliff to the right and a giant mountain to left and semi trucks going fast as hell all around me. YIKES. Then I lived in Dublin and had to deal with their crazy driving, too.

ireland20080828_0033.jpg The warmth of the Sun peeked through the throw blanket of cloud cover for the first time all week as Victor and I trekked to Dingle, Ireland. We managed to cover the width of the country in my first ever visit to the island. Tomorrow we shoot the wedding but our travels up to this point have been adventurous.

A. Driving has been quite entertaining...near collision experiences abound as Victor tends the wheel (from the opposite side of the car) and I decipher the numerous maps.

B. Brazen Head pub...supposedly serving brew since 1198, it's Ireland's oldest pub and quite quaint and nostalgic. I did fish 'n chips here. Classic.

C. Guinness Storehouse tour...this tour of the Guinness factory was one of my favorite segments of the trip. So much history behind Ireland's most famous porter. I learned how to pour my own pint...I'm a pro now.

D. The Fitzsimmons pub in the Temple Bar/Barf district was the only place Victor and I could mooch free wifi. We often found ourselves enjoying a pint of Smithwick's and responding to emails via iPhones while enjoying LIVE covers of U2, Oasis, Sno Patrol and The Beatles. Wonderwall is still a rad song.

E. Victor has this thing when booking hotel rooms where he thinks a "double" bed is two beds in a single room...when in fact it's a "full" bed in a single room. Due to this technicality in understanding, we shared a full size bed the fist night in Dublin. You have my permission to laugh.

F. I've never gone nine rounds with Jet Lag...seriously, who's he been training with???

G. I finally got to use a Dyson Airblade to dry my hands while at the Guinness Storehouse. AWE-SUM!

H. I linked up with Janine Walker, a photographer from Northern Ireland, in Dublin for a shoot. I love meeting new people via my blog in person!

I. The best slice West of Italy can be found at Gruel in Dublin, Ireland. Hands down the most incredible pizza to ever touch my lips!!!

So that's what's going on in the Irish Summer Time zone. Cheers!

"I love being in love" has just been granted its 15 minutes of fame in my extensive archive of favorite movie lines. This comes courtesy of a flick I can't bring myself to type in the annals of the world wide web solely for the fact that I don't want Google matchmaking "FRED EGAN" with a movie that rhymes with "The Motherhood of Babbling Aunts...2" The context of the quote was delivered in a caravan of questions such as, "Do you think there's just one person out there we're meant to love?" and "Have you ever been in love?" The answer from which I mine my new aphorism.

I love being in love.

High as a kite...low as a backstab...and everywhere in between. Being in love makes me feel alive...it makes me feel, period. I love it...just off the top of my head.

"Who would you have photograph your own wedding?" That's the question I'm answering this week and I've found it to be quite rewarding thinking about this decision with no pressure of a wedding date looming over my head. It's a short list of people I'd trust to capture my day...and they all evoke classic style, romance and joy.

Tears creeped down my cheek in that dimly lit ballroom in Las Vegas 16 months ago. That's when Joe Buissink made my Short List. Done. The words that escaped his lips were a man's passion. He loves wedding photography...he was made to do this. That is beautiful beyond human language.

Fred~ I know what you mean. I came across an article about him and his work when I was learning photography seven years ago. It was hugely influential on me as a photographer!

I'll second all these on your short list. Hell, you are even on my short list. But I have a feeling my short list is slightly longer than yours. It's a shame I only plan to marry once...how will I ever choose?!

Continuing on this morning featuring the photographers I'd hand pick to capture my wedding day, they all evoke classic style, romance and joy. It's no surprise then that I'm drawn to photographers whose work possesses the look and feel of film. Grain, muted colors and sepias embody the potential to send moments into a romantic orbit.

Elizabeth Messina was recently voted one of America's top wedding photographers (along with Jose Villa) by American Photo magazine. All I can say is this, "Her wedding photography makes me want to fall in love this very instant...be a hopeless romantic...love until there's nothing left."

Everyday this week I'm answering the question I often get asked, "Who would you have photograph your own wedding?" Over the years, I've had the privilege of developing an eye for what I want (and want to be inspired by), whereas, many brides don't allow themselves the luxury of years but only months. It's a short list of people I'd trust to capture my day...and they all evoke classic style, romance and joy.

Jose Villa evokes beauty, a quirky sense of humor and clean lines throughout his work. I actually believe the look of film allows the romantic undertones of your wedding to ruminate long after the fragrance of your bouquet leaves your nostrils. I've met Jose on several occasions as a colleague and he'd be a great guy to have around for one of the most important days of my life.
